I’m Marco, a UX designer at Siren. In this post I’d like to discuss the UX perspective of the newly released Siren 14. I know that every time a company launches a new release of something, a statement is made to say “this is the best ever.” But Siren 14 is not only the best and most beautiful Siren platform ever, it’s the first Siren built on three essential pillars of user experience:
Pillar one: User obsession
For Siren 14 we spent over a year in conversation with our customers, understanding their needs and wants. In a market where “usability” is an overused term, with Siren 14, we can say with confidence that we believed in the process. We collected over a hundred and thirty hours of interviews, hundreds of maps, and months of research. Spending all that effort directly in the field allowed us to deliver a product made for law enforcement, tested in action, where experiencing the proper situational awareness means saving lives.
Pillar two: The curb effect
Do you know what the curb effect is? The term refers to ramps that allow people with disabilities to step on the sidewalks more easily. We all use them regardless of our ability because we benefit from them and have, in a way, learned to expect them. Another example is GPS, built for military purposes. It becomes an indispensable way in contemporary life for moving efficiently from A to B. We see in this release that Siren 14 was born for law enforcement as well as the other industries it serves. Precisely because of the need for technology in extremely sensitive scenarios, Siren’s capabilities are now accessible from any location so data analysis can reveal deep connections in a manner that is intuitive, secure, and real-time. It can be relied on and is now expected. Ideal for police and intelligence but also this can work for any type of investigation. Fraud, Cyber, Auditing, Supply Chain. It’s something analysts in any job will become familiar with soon when using Siren.
Pillar three: Simplification
Siren 14 is not simply a collection of “features” but instead it’s a new and intuitive way to investigate using data. Siren 14 is a real case of taking things back to basics, inspired by simple actions like searching for something online or adding an item to a shopping cart. I love to think about this version as the Krav Maga of investigative software:
- Maximizing efficiency with simple gestures
- Reducing learning processes
- Operating on any device, anywhere, in any situation
- Even the most complex scenario
I’m proud to say that today, with Siren 14, it is possible to:
- find information in all the available databases in a single search
- say goodbye to complicated strings in languages like SQL, but use dynamic filters to refine your search with one click
- drastically reduce analysis time by getting all the relationships on a single screen
- collect the most critical documents in the various graphs to continue the investigation in the updated graph browser
- use a non-intrusive generative AI that, at the right moment, helps the analyst to assemble all the pieces of the investigation to create self-explanatory reports in just a few seconds
As a product designer, Siren 14 represents for me, the application of the rules of design ergonomics. For the analysts, our end customer, it’s an extreme elevation of the capabilities, where hidden connections should no longer exist, and the big picture is clear allowing them to make the right decisions to keep people, things and organizations safe.
Without the three pillars of user obsession, the curb effect and simplification, I would not have achieved my goal as a product designer. As we expand the platform these pillars become more important, especially as AI will accelerate the curb effect and I know that I will need them at the forefront of the next frontier.
